Sept. 17, 2007
THIS WEEK'S SLATE Date Opponent Time 9/21 at Air Force 2 p.m. 9/23 San Jose St. Noon The Panthers head to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes, Tuesday, then travel to Pocatello, Idaho to compete in the Idaho State Tournament. UNI will meet Air Force Friday and take on San Jose State Sunday. UNI PANTHERS The Panthers finished the week 1-1 after sprinting past IUPUI 3-0 and falling 1-0 in a close overtime affair to Valparaiso. With last weekend's games in the books, the Panthers have a 2-3-1 record. Chelsie Hochstedler continued her scoring ways, netting two more goals against IUPUI and bringing her season total to a Missouri Valley Conference best five goals. Hochstedler also leads the Valley in points with 10. Amy Seubert scored her first goal of the season, the game winner, against IUPUI. The senior currently is second on the team with three points. Laura Wagner continued to lead the offensive charge in shots and currently is second in the MVC with 22 shots on the season. As a team, UNI leads the Valley in fouls with 89, a total that head coach Kathy Kakoyianni-Bering attributes to an increased level of agressiveness from last year to this season. FIELD NOTES: KICKIN' CANCER AUCTION: The Panthers' pink game-worn jerseys from last Sunday's Kickin' Cancer game are now on the auction block. Go to www.unipanthers.com and click on the "auctions" tab to bid. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: Senior Amy Seubert scored her first goal of the season at IUPUI. The goal, Seubert's first since her freshman season, proved to be the game-winner. Seubert, who is a defender/midfielder, has tallied a goal and an assist this season. DOUBLE VISION: Freshman Chelsie Hochstedler scored twice in UNI's 3-0 victory over IUPUI. The last Panther to score twice in one game, Aimee Rasmusson, did so in her final collegiate game (10-22-06). Conversely, Hochstedler accomplished the feat in just her fifth contest as a Panther. STREAKING: With consecutive victories over Wisconsin-Green Bay and IUPUI, the Panthers won two games in a row for the first time since 2004. In that year, UNI beat Indiana State and Drury in back-to-back affairs. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS IOWA HAWKEYES The Hawkeyes currently are 1-1-3 on the season and are coming off a 1-0 victory over Drake. The Hawks tied Navy 1-1 in their season opener, then played to a scoreless tie with Northern Illinois in game two. The Hawks have scored just two goals on the season, both by Kelsey Shaw. Shaw has scored on both of her shot-on-goal attempts, and is the only Hawkeye player with more than one point. Defensively Lindsey Boldt has played all 510 minutes in-goal and has tallied 19 saves. The Hawkeyes are coached by second-year head coach Ron Rainey. AIR FORCE FALCONS The Falcons are 1-3-2 on the season and have scored just two goals in six games. Forwards Ashley Collins and Roni Yadlin sit at the top of the stat sheet with a goal each and Collins leads the team in shots with 14. The Falcons have outshot opponents 69-55, but can't seem to find the goal. Defensively, Erin Wallace and Elizabeth Smith have split time in-goal with Wallace playing the majority of minutes. Wallace has allowed five goals and has tallied 11 saves in 535 minutes. Air Force is coached by 13-year head coach Doug Hill. SAN JOSE STATE SPARTANS The Spartans are winless on the season and carry an 0-3-2 record. SJSU has scored just five goals this season, with Kristin Krale and Jackie Zabek contibuting two each. Krale also has an assist to her credit and leads the team with five points.Defensively, Nina Butera and Marissa Dayton have split time at the goalkeeper position with Dayton starting in four of SJSU's six games. Butera has played in two, but has allowed just one goal and has tallied 10 saves in 180 minutes played. The Spartans are coached by third-year head coach Dave Siracusa PROPERTY OF A LADY: Freshman Chelsie Hochstedler scored her third goal in as many games, taking control of two different UNI records in the process. Hochstedler now owns UNI records for most consecutive games with a goal and most consecutive games with a point, records formerly owned by Panther veterans Jackie Gielau and Lindsey Daugherty, among others.FROM A VIEW TO A STARTER: Sophomore Laura Wagner has gone from a redshirt a year ago to a team leader this season. Wagner leads the Panthers in shots with 17, twice her nearest teammate, and has been indespensible up front for UNI this season. NOBODY DOES IT BETTER: When Heidi O'Mara is on her game, nobody does it better. Dating back to last season, UNI's last four victories have been on the back of O'Mara's goalkeeping. All four have been shutouts, with Illinois State, Creighton, Wisconsin-Green Bay and IUPUI on the losing end. ROLL ON DOWN THE HIGHWAY: The Panthers will not return to the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex for a home game until an Oct. 5 matchup with Evansville. This marks the latest regular season home opener the Panthers have ever had, beating 2002's Sept. 28 date by a week. YOUTH MOVEMENT: Freshmen Chelsie Hochstedler and Ericka O'Meara and sophomore Laura Wagner have been major contributors up front for UNI this season. Hochstedler scored both of the Panthers' goals on opening weekend while the offense has funneled the ball to O'Meara and Wagner with consistency. Wagner leads the Panthers with 13 shots, including six on-goal, while O'Meara is second with six shots, including four on-goal. TIE and JACKet: The Panthers opened their season with a 1-1 tie against the South Dakota State Jacks. UNI has now tied to open its season in three out of eight seasons, including 2002 and 2004, and has six total ties in team history.
