Panthers Hold On for the 65-58 Victory Over Creighton in Final Home Game
Feb. 26, 2005
Seniors Alex Cook and Emily Berry went out in style today as the Panthers picked up the 65-58 win over Creighton in the final home game of the season. Cook made school history today when she captured her 1,000th career rebound by becoming the first women's basketball player to score 1,000 points and get 1,000 rebounds. She is only the fourth person in the Missouri Valley Conference to accomplish this feat. The Panthers jumped out to a fast start and lead by as much as 17 points in the first half. At the break the Panthers were shooting 44 percent from the field (11-of-25) while Creighton struggled, making eight-of-27 (29.6 percent). UNI held the 30-17 lead at the break.
Creighton rallied back in the second period and capitalized on Panther mistakes, scoring 18 points off UNI turnovers. The Jays came within six points with five minutes remaining in the game. But thanks to gritty performances from Alex Cook and Cassie Hager down the stretch, the Panthers proved too much for the Blue Jays to handle as UNI improved to 18-9 overall, 12-4 in the MVC while Creighton dropped to 17-8 overall and 11-5 in league play. Cook finished with nine points and pulled down 14 rebounds, with 12 of her boards coming in the second half. Hager was the leading scorer for the Panthers, tallying 18 points while Amanda Faas tied a career high putting up 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds. For the Blue Jays, Angie Janis scored 27 points and recorded nine rebounds. Laura Spanheimer finished the game with seven points and five steals, while contributing three rebounds. The Panthers will be back on the road at Wichita State Thursday, March 3. Results will be available after the game at www.unipanthers.com. |
