Carbondale, Ill. - The UNI track and field teams wrapped up day one competition at the MVC Indoor Championships, held in Carbondale, Ill.

Senior Derrick Benner captured all-conference honors after finishing third with a 61-8 ½ performance in the weight throw competition. Sophomore Jarno Kivioja (Porvoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen Lukio) became the new MVC pole vault champion after clearing 17-5 ½, a personal best, with newcomer Andre Poljanec finishing in second with a 17- ¾ height.

Patrick Hunter (Racine, Wis./Washington Park) won the preliminary heat of the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 6.80, with transfer Jamie Goodwin (McKeesport, Pen./McKeesport/Akron) coming in second in 6.85. Both will advance to the finals on Saturday.
 

 

Kyle Smith (Toronto, Canada/Birchmount Park) finished second in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line in 1:56.18 and Adam Hinders (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) finished in fourth in 1:56.38. Both qualified for the final heat on Saturday.

Dirk Homewood automatically qualified for the NCAA championships with his 21.30 time. Homewood finished first in the preliminary round of the race, with Cody Eichmeier (Ackley, Iowa/AGWSR) in second with a provisionally qualifying 21.69 time and Goodwin in third in 21.86.

The Panther men dominated in the 400 meter race, with Ryan Kedley (Lowden, Iowa/North Cedar) winning the preliminary rounds with a 48.19 time, Terrance Reid (Davenport, Iowa/Central) placing second in 48.25, Dirk Homewood (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) in fourth (48.66) and Alex Alva (London, Ontario/Regina Mundi) in sixth (49.20). All qualified for the finals at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday.

UNI's distance medley relay team of Nick Mass, Brent Dahlstrom (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls), Jack Ogden (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) and Dylan Davis (Adel, Iowa/Adel-DeSoto-Minburn) finished with all-conference honors for its 10:08.24 time. The relay finished third in the event.
