University of Northern Iowa cross country athletes senior Quinn Vermie and junior Traci Hawley were placed on the 2006 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Scholar-Athlete Cross Country team.

The Scholar-Athlete team is a unique Valley award in that it accounts for academic and athletic excellence. Those eligible must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.00 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions, and they must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.

Hawley (Ames, Iowa/Ames) placed third at the MVC Cross Country Championships last weekend with a time of 17:51 in the women's 5K.  She holds a 3.01 grade point average (GPA) in art.  Vermie (Runnells, Iowa/Southeast Polk) also helped the UNI women's team to a fourth-place finish at the championships with a 13th-place finish in 18:29. Vermie has a 3.44 GPA in art.

In addition to this, freshman Dorian Ulrey (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale), sophomore Caedryn Schrunk (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake) and Hawley all earned all-conference honors at the MVC Championships last weekend, placing in the top-10 in their respective races.

UNI competes next at the NCAA Midwest Regionals Nov. 11 in Minneapolis, Minn.
