IOWA CITY, Iowa - University of Northern Iowa sophomore Dorian Ulrey scored a runner-up finish in his first race of the cross country season at Iowa's Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday, while senior Traci Hawley led the Panther women with a fifth-place finish.
Hawley (Ames, Iowa/Ames) shattered UNI's school record by running the women's 4-kilometer course at Ashton Cross Country Course in 14:13.52 to lead the Panthers, who finished fourth in the team race behind the host Hawkeyes, Wichita State and Oregon State. Iowa's Diane Nukuri won the event 13:14.20, a course record.
Hawley's run, which cut more than 32 seconds off her previous personal best, was the fastest 4K in Panther women's history by a margin of 26 seconds over the previous record of 14:40, recorded by Elly Glass in 2002.
Junior Caedryn Schrunk (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake) was seventh in a personal-best 14:15.56, also well below the former UNI record. Sophomore Andrea Wacker (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) finished 27th in 15:01.32, while freshman Regina Reinig (Portsmouth, Iowa/Harlan) was 36th in 15:58.58 and junior Amanda Huling (Hampton, Iowa/Hampton-Dumont) placed 38th in 15:35.83.
Ulrey (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale), who missed the Panthers' first meet of the season with an illness, took second place in the 8K men's race in 25 minutes, 4.30 seconds. The All-Missouri Valley Conference performer from a season ago finished just two seconds off the winning pace of 25:02.20 turned in by Iowa's Andy Napier.
Iowa took the men's team title by placing five runners in the top 10, followed by Wichita State in second place and the Panthers in third.
Seniors Mike Clancy (Iowa City,Iowa/West) and Chris Lawson (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) were 15th and 16th for UNI, with another senior, Andy Schon (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) finishing 19th. Freshman Kevin Morgan (Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln) was 24th in 28:09.21.
