Panthers Have Five Regional Qualifying Marks at Sun Angel Relays

Tempe, Ariz. - Five Panthers had regional qualifying marks this past weekend at the Sun Angel Relays, hosted by Arizona State University. Sophomore Rachel Jansen (Orange City, Iowa) placed secondin the discus with a throw of 173-0, which was also a regional qualifying mark. In the shot put, Jansen threw 51-1, which was also a regional qualifying mark and gave her a third place finish at the meet. Jansen also broke the school record, which she previously held at 51-0 ¾, which she set earlier in the season.

In running events, freshman Ryan Grenko (Iowa City, Iowa) finished fifth in the men's 400 meters and regionally qualified with a time of 47.19. Other regional qualifying marks included Jarno Kivioja (Porvoo, Finland) taking first place and in the pole vault with a height of 17-04 ½. Not far behind was Andre Poljanec (Ljubljana, Slovenia), with a mark of 17-0 3/4, which placed him fourth overall in the event. Yuriy Litvinski (Sliven, Bulgaria) finished second and qualified in the triple jump with a distance of 50-6. Freshman Marcin Kazubowski (Gdansk, Poland) finished second in the javelin with a throw of 191-10.

UNI had other solid performances on the day as well. Freshman hurdler Greg Offerman (Charles City, Iowa) ran well in the both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles. Offerman finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.15 and took seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.07.
 

 

The men's 4x100 relay consisting of seniors Samuel Dodoo (Accra, Ghana), Mickell Bruce, Jamie Goodwin (Duquesne, Pa.) and Patrick Hunter (Racine, Wis.) ran for a fourth place finish with a time of 42.6. In other relay action, the men's 4x400 relay team ran 3:10.00 allowing them to finish fourth as well. The team included Grenko, Kyle Smith (Toronto, Canada), Tyler Mulder (Orange City, Iowa) and Mark Harris (Toronto, Canada). Mulder also ran well in the men's 800-meter run. He was clocked in at 1:50.96, finishing fourth and barely missing the regional qualifying time.

The Panthers women finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Jamie Hutchinson (Charles City, Iowa) led the way with a time of 2:10.29. Freshman Moa Westman (Norrtalje, Sweden) and senior Angie German (Manchester, Iowa) were right behind, running 2:10.39 and 2:12.54. The women's hammer throw was completed on Friday night. UNI's Jansen threw for a fifth place finish with a mark of 172-8.

The Panthers are home next weekend hosting the UNI Twilight. The meet will take place all day Saturday, April 22.
