NIU CROSS COUNTRY STARTS YEAR OFF WITH A BANG, WINS OWN HUSKIE
INVITATIONAL BY WIDE MARGIN
DeKALB, IL --- Senior Alicja Czajka (Swarzedz, Poland / Poznan)---granted
a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA to compete for the Northern
Illinois University women's cross country team this fall---is making
the most of her opportunity.
Czajka ran a 19:15 to win the Huskie Invitational hosted by Northern
Illinois on its own North Forty Course Friday (Sept. 3). The Huskies
beat out lone competitor Wisconsin-Green Bay 40-19.
"It has been a pleasure to watch Alicja grow not only athletically,
but personally as well over the last few years," Huskie head
coach Shantel Twiggs noted. "This is just step one on
the road to what we hope will be one of the most successful cross
country seasons since NIU joined the Mid-American Conference. Alicja
is set to lead the way."
Following just behind Czajka into the chute was fellow senior Michelle
Rhoden (Joliet / West) who posted a 19:33. She nipped UWGB's
highest placewinner---Natalie McPeak---who placed third with a time
of 19:38.
Sophomores Jessica Schauff (Dixon) and Emily Ramsey
(Waukesha, WI / West) took home back-to-back spots in the final
standings, earning fourth and fifth, respectively. The duo also
rounded out the list of Huskies who put up sub-20-minute times with
efforts of 19:41 and 19:49.
Northern Illinois returns to action Friday (Sept. 10) when the Huskies
travel to Peoria for the Bradley Open. Action is scheduled to begin
at 5:30 p.m. (CDT).
