OPEN SEASON WITH A SEVENTH-PLACE FINISH AT ILLINOIS STATE REDBIRD
CLASSIC The Huskies were led by freshman Jackie Bailey (Decatur / Warrenburg-Latham), who began her NIU career with a 241 (82-80-79). Bailey's 79 in Tuesday's final round was the only round in which a Northern Illinois player eclipsed the 80-stroke plateau. "I'm very proud of Jackie, playing number one for us in her collegiate debut," coach Tyska commented. Following Bailey in was senior Janelle Warrick (Neenah, WI) carding a 246 (83-83-80). Sophomore Irish Wahlen (Hanover / River Ridge) had a career tournament in Normal, firing a career-best 85 in the first round. Wahlen equaled that performance in the second round, and followed it up on Tuesday with another career-best, carding an 80. Wahlen's 250 (85-85-80) aggregate left her just four strokes behind Warrick at the finish. Wahlen's previous career-best round had been an 86 at the Notre Dame Invitational in September 2001. "Janelle had her lowest round of the tournament today, just when we needed it, and Irish found a great time for her career-low round," Tyska added. Senior Amanda Mapley (Davenport, IA / Bettendorf) struggled on Tuesday, carding a 92 to finish the tournament at 256 (83-81-92). Huskie newcomer Lynzey Gumm (Galesburg) equaled Mapley at 92 on Tuesday to round out the 54-hole event with a 263 (84-87-92). Freshman Jackie Helsop (Pequat Lakes, MN) carded a 178 (86-92) on Monday before withdrawing from Tuesday's round due to a knee injury. The host Redbirds were not very giving, making few mistakes en route to a victory in their own tournament. Illinois State scored a 894 (299-298-297). Southern Illinois University finished in second-place, 37 strokes behind the Redbirds. ISU freshman Samantha Richdale made an impressive debut, firing a 218 (72-72-74), to win medalist honors by six strokes over teammate Ashlee Johnson. All five Illinois State golfers finished in the top-12. The Northern Illinois University women's golf team takes next week off before returning to action Saturday, September 21, at Bowling Green State University's Falcon Invitational. -Copy by Matthew Baylor -30-
