Northern Illinois Women’s Golf Finishes Third At Loyola Rambler Invitational

WINNETKA, IL — Northern Illinois University’s women’s golf team battled through steady rains, consistent winds, a six-hour round and a 36-degree windchill to finish third at the Loyola Rambler Invitational held Tuesday afternoon in Winnetka, IL.

Oakland University claimed the event title with a 36-hole score of 640, while Western Illinois grabbed second with a 651, just three shots in front of the Huskies (654). Oakland’s Patricia Ellsworth won individual medalist honors with a two-round score of 150. After opening the 11-team event with a 2-over-par 74, Ellsworth held firm under the difficult final-round conditions and shot an impressive 4-over-par 76 to win.

Jamie Carney and Lisa Bailey led the Huskies, tying for seventh place. Carney was outstanding under the circumstances and shot a team-low 80 in the finale to coast up the leaderboard. After opening with an 82, Carney was able to slice two shots off her opening-round score and card her second top-10 finish of the year. Although Bailey stumbled a bit in the second round, the sophomore still led the team for the sixth time this season and recorded her fifth top 10 showing.

Jackie Bailey also moved up the final standings after shooting a second consecutive 82 to tie for ninth. Bailey opened the day in 16th, but played well in the adverse weather to enjoy her third top-10 performance of the 2004-05 campaign.

“Our last couple of holes were where we lost it,” head coach Pam Tyska said. “Had we played average, we could have won this tournament, and that is a little disconcerting. I had a chance to talk with a disappointed group after the meet and we will learn from this. The next time we are in this position, hopefully we will be able to go out and shut the door. This could be a good round to get out of our systems before the Mid-American Conference Championships.”

Despite the rough finish to Tuesday’s round, the Huskies will look to continue their overall solid play April 22-24 at the Mid-American Conference Championships in Hamilton, OH. The 54-hole event will take part at the Walden Pond Golf Course with 18 holes of golf scheduled each morning at 8 a.m.
