MANHATTAN, Kan. - Northern Illinois saved its best for last and posted its lowest score in the third round of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate hosted by Kansas State University. Zach Jecklin (Bloomington, Ill.) and Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) led the Huskies and placed among the tournament's top 30 finishers. Battling temperatures in 50's and winds out of the north at 20-25 miles per hour under overcast skies in Tuesday's final round, Jecklin posted a three-round score of 230 to finish in a tie for 23rd while Frame fired a 73 in his final round to post a 232 that placed him in a tie for 28th. NIU improved nine strokes from its second round performance and posted a team score of 304 in the final round, giving them a three-round score of 935 to finish ninth in the tournament. Miami (Ohio) finished first. Alex Wagner (St. Charles, Ill./East) totaled 235, including a final round 78, to finish in a tie for 37th. Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) finished in a tie for 44th at 240 while Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./East) and Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman) tied for 56th. "Andrew and Tim played well today and we got better each round of the tournament," said head coach John Cleary. "The conditions were tough today because the wind shifted from yesterday and the course played completely different. We just need to keep improving and come back home and play better on more familiar courses."
The Huskies are next in action Oct. 7-8 at the Windon Memorial, hosted by Northwestern University, in Glencoe, Ill. |
