Sept. 9, 2007 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - After surrendering three goals to the Birmingham Southern Panthers on Friday, the Nicholls State soccer team looked to finish strong against Gardner-Webb in the final game of the Runnin Bulldog tournament. After not scoring a goal two days before, Nicholls' Alicia Gautreau scored her first goal of the season, but the two GWU scored in the first and second period was enough for the 2-1 victory. The Runnin Bulldogs jumped on the Colonels from the start, limiting the number of shots Nicholls took, while attacking goalkeeper Molly Mersereau consistently. In the 17th minute, a foul by Nicholls gave GWU a penalty kick, which Angie Harvey used to her advantage, getting the shot past Mersereau for the first goal of the match. GWU would not allow a single Nicholls shot on goal in the first half, while getting 14 shots off themselves. The second half was much like the first for Nicholls, as GWU would continue the offensive attack where in the 60th minute Karissa Jensen found an open Lindsey Gladhill who earned her third goal of the season to put GWU up 2-0. Gautreau's goal was the only shot the Colonels got in the entire game as GWU would outshoot Nicholls 26-1. Although Nicholls would leave Boiling Springs without a win, the team was not without individual awards as Mersereau and Gautreau were both named to the all-tournament team. Mersereau, who allowed five goals on the weekend, still had 22 saves on the weekend, while Gautreau had 2 shots with a goal scored. The Colonels will have a two game home stand starting Friday when the team welcomes Louisiana-Monroe to Thibodaux with gametime set for 4 p.m |
