February 23, 2007 CONWAY, Ark. - The Nicholls women's basketball team will look to keep their Southland Conference Tournament hopes alive, as the Lady Colonels travel to Conway, Ark. to play Central Arkansas, Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
The Lady Colonels and Sugar Bears will be meeting for just the second time in school history, with their first meeting coming on January 27 in Thibodaux. In that game, Central Arkansas defeated Nicholls, 74-72.
Both teams are both coming off upset wins. The Lady Colonels (6-18, 4-9 SLC) came back from an 18-point deficit to defeat Northwestern State, 85-76, in overtime, ending a 15-game losing streak against the Lady Demons, dating back to the 1997-1998 season. The Sugar Bears upset East-Division Champion Southeastern Louisiana (12-14, 6-8 SLC), 69-58, in Hammond.
Senior guard Jamie Octave leads the way for Nicholls (6-18, 4-9 SLC), averaging 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Octave, who ranks in fifth place on Nicholls' all-time list with 1,115 career points, is ranked in the top 15 of the Southland Conference in six different categories, including: scoring (third), three-point field goals made (seventh), three-point field goal percentage (tenth), steals (11th), blocked shots (12th) and free throw percentage (13th). Sophomore guard Katherine Plummer contributes 12.5 points and 4.5 assists per outing. In league play, Plummer ranks second in the SLC, averaging 5.18 assists and 2.58 steals per game. Barry adds 11.8 points per game, while sophomore forward Dominique Washington leads the Lady Colonels in rebounding, averaging 5.2 boards per game.
