Aston, Pa - On Thursday, March 15 Neumann College welcomed their spring athletes with a Commissioning Ceremony led by Athletic Director Chuck Sack, Vice President of Mission Sr. Marguerite O'Beirne, and Director of the Center of Sports and Spirituality and Character Development Dr. Edward Hastings. The ceremony included several prayers for the student athletes and the blessing of their hands with a Sacred Oil. "I was pleased with the seriousness towards the commissioning ceremony and the commitment of spirituality through a sport," Sr. Marguerite said about the athletes. Chuck Sack opened the ceremony by reminding the spring athletes of how fortunate they are to be able to have the opportunity and good fortune to be a part of the Dr. Edward Hastings anointed the Knights with a Sacred Oil that was blessed by Neumann's Father Jude Michael. He further explained that the Oil was traditionally used to anoint kings upon the forehead symbolizing strength and good fortune. In the commissioning ceremony each individual was anointed in order to strengthen their hands that will hold the instruments used to achieve ultimate success. With the help of each team Chaplain the Knight's were blessed with the Sacred Oil. The ceremony ended with a captain's dinner which congratulated and celebrated those individuals who have taken leadership rolls within their individual teams. |
