Catrina Thompson Advances On First Day Of NCAA Singles Championship

May 23, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. - Notre Dame senior and 30th-ranked Catrina Thompson (Las Vegas, NV) rallied for a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 three-set victory over #56 Yasmin Schnack of UCLA in round of 64 action from the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship. The victory was the 100th of her career and moved Thompson into the second round of the draw for the third consecutive year.

Thompson will now face second-ranked and second-seeded Megan Falcon of LSU in tomorrow's round of 32. Falcon, who cruised past Renata Kucerkova of Fresno State, 6-1, 6-3, enters the matchup riding a 25-match win streak and overall record of 35-2.

Thompson struggled early and quickly found herself down a set, dropping the opening frame 6-1, but she quickly regained control of the match and never looked back.

She responded with an equally dominant, 6-1, triumph in the second set before holding off Schnack in the third and deciding set, 6-4.

Thompson improves to 27-11 on the year and 100-48 for her career. She became the sixth Notre Dame women's player to ever win 100 or more matches.
