April 7, 2007

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 2 Notre Dame women's tennis team swept past No. 34 Indiana, 7-0, en route to its 15th consecutive victory Saturday afternoon inside the IU Tennis Center. The Irish improve to 20-1 on the season, while the Hoosiers drop to 15-4.

Notre Dame grabbed a 1-0 lead following victories in all three doubles matches. Senior All-Americans Catrina Thompson (Las Vegas, NV) and Christian Thompson (Las Vegas, NV) knocked off Alba Berdala and Laura McGaffigan at No. 1, 8-6. The twins improve to 23-7 overall and 15-4 in dual matches.

Freshman Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, KS) and sophomore Kelcy Tefft (Enid, OK) defeated Sigrid Fischer and Cecile Perton in the No. 2 position, 8-3. The duo remains unbeaten since teaming up earlier this month. Krisik and Tefft are 4-0 overall and 4-0 in dual action.

Freshman Cosmina Ciobanu (Brea, CA) and sophomore Katie Potts (Brookfield, WI) held off Erin Clark and Brianna Williams, 8-6, at No. 3. Ciobanu and Potts now stand 5-0 overall and 3-0 in dual matches.

Notre Dame took all six singles matches in relatively convincing fashion. Catrina Thompson, Tefft, Ciobanu and Potts all won their respective matches in straight sets. Christian Thompson captured her match in three sets, while Krisik was victorious when her opponent retired midway through the second set (Krisik took the opening set).

#26 Catrina Thompson upended Berdala, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. She improves to 21-8 overall and 16-5 in dual action. Tefft had no trouble getting past Fischer at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2. Tefft, victorious in six straight matches, now stands 20-6 overall and 15-3 in dual matches this season.

#48 Ciobanu registered her team-leading 31st victory of the season following a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Williams at No. 5. She also extended her winning streak to a team-high 21 matches. Ciobanu (31-4, 21-0) remains the only unbeaten Irish player since dual action began in mid-January.

Potts snapped her two-match losing streak with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set victory over Lindsey Stuckey at No. 6. She now stands 13-8 overall and 6-4 in dual matches.

Notre Dame returns to action on Monday afternoon at Ohio State. First-serve with the Buckeyes is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
