Notre Dame Leads First-Ever BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship By 44 Strokes Over Miami.

Notre Dame, Ind. - The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lead the 2003 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship after the first 36 holes of play Monday with a 41-over par total of 617 after firing rounds of 312 and 305 on the par 72, 6,033-yard Warren Golf Course. The Irish go into Tuesday morning's final round of play with a whopping 44-stroke lead over the University of Miami. The Hurricanes struggled in the cold and wind for a 36-hole total of 661 following rounds of 327 and 334.

Individually, Notre Dame's Katie Brophy has a two-stroke lead over teammates Shannon Byrne and Karen Lotta and a three-stroke lead over Miami's Tina Miller after 36 holes. Brophy shot rounds of 77 and 75 for an eight-over par 152.

Byrne opened with an 82 in the early round, but followed with the best round of the day by any of the women, with a two-over par 72 for a 10-over par 154 total. Lotta led the tournament after the first round with a 75 and shot a 79 in the afternoon for her 154. Miller led Miami's golfers with an 11-over par 155 after rounds of 76 and 79 for a 155. A fourth Irish golfer rounded out the top five, as Suzie Hayes is five strokes behind the tournament leader with a 157 after rounds of 78 and 79. Monday's opening two rounds were played with temperatures in the mid-40's with wind and rain throughout the day.

Two Georgetown golfers - Nicole Hayashi and Christy Larrimore - are sixth and seventh respectively. Hayashi shot a 16-over par 160 (82-78) and Larrimore checks in at 161 (83-78).

On the team side, Georgetown follows Notre Dame and Virginia Tech in third place with a 673 (347-326) while Boston College is fourth with a 675 (334-341) in the four-team tournament.

The final round of play at the 2003 BIG EAST Women's Championship will be played on Tuesday, April 22 with the first set of golfers set to tee off at Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course at 8:00 a.m. (EST). Follow the tournament via live golf stats at Golfstat.com.
