Notre Dame loses 10-7 despite five Irish players scoring.

PHILADELPHIA - The Notre Dame men's lacrosse team lost on the road as the University of Pennsylvania won its season opener by a score of 10-7. Five different players scored for the Irish, but it wasn't enough as the Irish dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Notre Dame built an early lead but was then held scoreless for the next 15 minutes enabling the Quakers to score 5 straight goals.

David Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) put the Irish on the board early, and Tom Glatzel (Ellicot City, Md.) followed to give the Irish an early 2-0 lead. Penn responded with three straight from Pete Janney including two in the last minute of the first quarter. The Quakers added two more off of goals from Billy Reidy and Scott Solow to extend the lead to 5-2.

The Irish got back on the board with a goals from senior Steadman Oakey (Charlottesville, Va.) and junior Todd Ulrich(Baltimore, Md.) sandwiched around a Quaker goal. Janney scored the last goal of the first half to give Pennsylvania a 7-4 lead at halftime.

The Quakers tacked on another goal in the third quarter to take an 8-4 lead. David Ulrich responded with two goals in the last 39 seconds of the third quarter to cut the deficit down to two goals.

Penn's Kevin Cadin and Todd Minerly each added a goal in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 10-6. Junior Mike Adams(Wilton, CT) closed out the scoring with a goal at 31 seconds remaining in the game.

Senior goalie Kirk Howell(Nashville, Tn.) had 14 saves in goal while Penn's John Carroll had 18 saves.

Notre Dame will play the second of three straight road games on March 11 against Denver.
