Women's Tennis Competed At UNC Wilmington Invitational

Ali Piacente and Ashleigh Murray claimed flight singles and doubles championships

Wilmington, NC - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team began their fall tournament schedule with a successful effort at the UNC Wilmington Invitational this past weekend.

Senior Ashleigh Murray and junior Ali Piacente shared the Flight B singles title. Then, they combined to capture the Flight A doubles title. Senior Ofra Friedman reached the Flight A singles final. Sophomore Michelle Alexander reached the Flight C finals. The doubles team of Friedman and freshman Yana Stoeva reached the finals of Flight A doubles. The team of junior Kathy Robey and freshman Koren Fleming reached the Flight B doubles final.

"Ashleigh Murray and Ali Piacente both played great this weekend," Charlotte coach Michaela Quinn said. "Overall we had a very good weekend as we dominated most of the flights. I am very proud of the way the team played in their first tournament of the season."

In Flight A, Friedman was leading Coastal Carolina's Petra Jantii, 6-4, 4-2, before Jantii withdrew. She defeated UNC Greensboro's Lisa Suggs, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the finals. Then, she was tied with UNCG's Emily Wade, 5-5, before having to retire due to injury.

In other Flight A action, Robey lost to UNC Wilmington's Lindsey Hess, 7-6, 5-7, 12-10, in her first match. Then, she lost to Coastal Carolina's Virginie Dinh, 6-2, 6-2, in her backdraw match.

In Flight B action, Piacente defeated High Point's A.C. Talus, 6-1, 6-1, in her first match. Then, she defeated UNC Wilmington's Lauren Isenhour, 6-2, 6-1. She defeated UNC Wilmington's Cassie Martin, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the finals. Then, she defeated Coastal Carolina's Hayley Rudman, 6-3, 6-4, to share the flight title.

 

 

In other Flight B action, Murray defeated Coastal Carolina's Sofie Alberg, 6-2, 6-0, in her first match. Then, she advanced to the semifinals where UNC Greensboro's Whitney Miles had to withdraw. Then, she defeated Coastal Carolina's Rudman, 6-4, 6-7, 10-8, to reach the finals. She defeated UNC Wilmington's Martin, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 to claim a share of the flight title.

In other Flight B action, Charlotte's Yana Stoeva defeated UNC Pembroke's Stacey Wood, 6-4, 6-1, in her first match. Then, she lost to Coastal Carolina's Rudman, 6-1, 6-4. In her next match, she defeated UNC Greensboro's Erica Zabkar, 6-3, 7-5. In her final match, she defeated UNC Wilmington's Isenhour, 6-2, 6-1.

In Flight C action, Alexander defeated UNC Wilmington's Janie deGraffenreid, 6-2, 6-1, in her first match. Then, she defeated High Point's Kelly Tolman, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the semifinals. Then, she defeated Coastal Carolina's Nicole Lemmerer, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, to reach the finals. In the finals, she lost to Coastal Carolina's Amy Pazahanick, 7-6, 6-3.

In other Flight C action, Fleming defeated UNC Pembroke's Natalie Dies, 7-5, 6-2, in her first match. She then lost to Coastal Carolina's Amy Pazahanick, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. In the backdraw, she defeated High Point's Jody Wicks, 6-4, 6-3. She also defeated UNC Pembroke's Stacey Wood, 6-2, 6-1, in her final match.

In other Flight C action, Charlotte's sophomore Catherine Lynas lost to UNC Greensboro's Sophie Rychlik, 6-2, 6-1.

In Flight A doubles action, Piacente and Murray defeated UNC Pembroke's Wood and Dies, 8-4. In the semifinals, they defeated Coastal Carolina's Rudman and Pazahanick, 8-6. In the finals, they defeated UNC Wilmington's Hess and Isenhour, 8-4. They, also defeated UNC Pembroke's Music and Saltzman, 8-0.

In other Flight A doubles action, Charlotte's Friedman and Stoeva defeated Coastal Carolina's Dinh and Coetzee, 8-2. In the semifinals, they defeated UNC Wilmington's Hess and Isenhour, 9-8. Instead of facing Piacente and Murray in the finals, they played Coastal Carolina's Rudman and Pazahanick. The 49ers doubles team lost that match, 8-6. They also lost to UNC Greensboro's Suggs and Rychlik, 8-4.

In Flight B doubles action, the team of Robey and Fleming defeated Coastal Carolina's Jantii and Lemmerer, 9-8, to reach the semifinals. Then, they defeated High Point's Celensu and Schabetsberger, 8-6, to reach the finals. In the finals, they lost to UNC Wilmington's Martin and Mears, 8-5.

In other Flight B doubles action, Alexander and Lynas defeated UNC Pembroke's Music and Saltzman, 8-2. In the quarterfinals, they lost to UNC Wilmington's Martin and Mears, 8-3.

The 49ers return to action this weekend at the NC State Fall Tournament, September 23-25.
