Monroeville, PA - The Charlotte 49ers (10-9) cruised into the quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over La Salle in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The 49ers face the winner of the Duquesne-Fordham match in the quarterfinals, Friday, April 20 at 6 pm.
The 49ers won two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte's Ana Spivakovsky and Ali Piacente won their eighth straight match with an 8-0 win over La Salle's Joann Lee and Lauren Perry. At number three doubles, Charlotte's Kathy Robey and Candace Cunningham won their third straight match with an 8-0 win over La Salle's Tasha Deneen and Martha Kutteh. At number two doubles, Charlotte's Koren Fleming and Michelle Alexander were leading La Salle's Rachael Barnhart and Mary Hardiman, 6-1, when the match was stopped since the 49ers had already clinched the doubles point.
The 49ers won three singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals. At number one singles, Charlotte's Spivakovsky won her 23rd match of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over La Salle's Lee. At number two singles, Charlotte's Robey easily won her 17th match of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over La Salle's Perry. At number three singles, Charlotte's Piacente was leading La Salle's Hardiman, 6-0, 3-0, when the match was stopped. At number four singles, Charlotte's Fleming was leading La Salle's Barnhart, 6-3, 4-0, when the match was stopped. At number five singles, Charlotte's Yana Stoeva was leading La Salle's Kutteh, 6-1, 2-0, when the match was stopped. At number six singles, Charlotte's Alexander won her 11th match of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over La Salle's Deneen.
