Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers open Atlantic 10 play this weekend when they host Fordham Friday at 4:00 p.m. The two teams play again Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The Niners then host George Washington for a doubleheader Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
Charlotte comes into the weekend with a record of 20-12. They were scheduled to open conference play last weekend but had all four games in Philadelphia cancelled due to weather.
The 49ers won a share of the A-10 regular season last year, going 17-3 in conference play. They were picked to finish third this year in the preseason poll, Fordham was picked to finish second.
The two teams met three times last year. Charlotte swept a doubleheader at Fordham in the regular season, winning the first game 4-2, then taking game two 9-1. The Rams topped the Niners 4-0 in the A-10 Tournament.
Charlotte is led by senior Evan Miller, who leads the team with a .363 batting average, 37 hits and 24 runs scored. Krist Killough leads the Niners with three home runs and 21 RBI. The senior now ranks second in school history with 16 career homers and fourth with 89 RBI.
Seniors Christy Murray and Kristen Bowen lead the pitching attack for the Niners. Murray is 10-6 this year with a 3.10 ERA and 73 strikeouts. She is in fourth place on the school's all-time wins list. Bowen is 8-6 this year with a 2.96 ERA and 66 strikeouts. She ranks third on the school's all-time wins list and is already the school's strikeout leader.
Fordham is led by Jessica Weckenman with a .386 batting average. Allison Twarowski is hitting .362 with four homers and has scored a team high 24 runs. She also has a 4-3 record on the mound with a 1.59 ERA. Erin Fisher leads the team with 23 RBI. Nicole Ayres is 7-2 with a 2.51 ERA while Sara Kinney is 6-6 with a 2.73 ERA.
