CHICAGO - Peaches Harris came off the bench to score 18 points, including 11 straight in a crucial second-half run for Charlotte, to lead the 49ers to a 58-46 win over Memphis on Friday in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament.
Seventh seeded Charlotte (16-12) advances to play second-seeded Houston (21-6) in the quarterfinals Saturday.
"This is a huge win for us, because it was a huge way to win," head coach Katie Meier said. "Our goal this year was to turn our program into a championship program. This win showed that we are on the right track, because we never gave up."
Alicia Abernathy had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Charlotte, while Princess Swilley led 10th-seeded Memphis (11-17) with 14 points.
"We just played hard," Peaches Harris said. "My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball. I was wide open, took my time and got the shot."
Shannon Hamp, who led Memphis in scoring during the regular season, was held to nine points on 4-of-12 shooting.
Memphis led 38-33 when Harris answered with a pair of three-pointers, scoring 11 points in a 14-0 run. The surge put Charlotte up 47-38 with about four minutes left. The Tigers were held scoreless for nearly six minutes during the run.
Charlotte led by as many as 13 late in the game. Memphis shot only 26 percent in the first half, but led 19-18.
