Southern Miss Edges Charlotte, 50-47

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Sonja Brown knocked down a pair of free throws with 5.8 seconds to play to give Southern Miss a 50-47 win over the Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team Sunday at Reed Green Coliseum. It was the final game of the regular-season for both teams.

Victoria Mason led a balanced scoring attack for Southern Miss (11-16, 4-10 C-USA). She finished with nine points. La'Tasha Sumerall and Tierra Lassiter added eight points each, while Brown finished the day with seven.

Jen Williams scored 14 points to lead Charlotte (15-12, 7-7 C-USA). Peaches Harris also topped double figures with 10 points. Adrienne Jordan pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The game came down to the final seconds. The 49ers pulled within one, 48-47, on a pair of Jordan with seven seconds to play. Seconds later with the Golden Eagles trying to run out the clock, the Niners sent Brown to the line for the deciding free throws. Charlotte had one last opportunity, but a Monica League three-point attempt was off the mark.

Southern Miss led 24-22 at the half opened the second half with nine unanswered to points to push the lead to 11, 33-22. Charlotte came back with a 17-1 run to take a five-point lead, 39-34, with 12:06 to play. The Golden Eagles retook the lead for good with four points from both Sumerall and Lassiter.

Charlotte will return to action Friday, when they play Memphis at 1:00 CT in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament in Chicago. The Niners enter as the seventh seed, while the Tigers are the 10th seed.
