Men's Tennis Advances In C-USA Tourney With 4-1 Win Over Saint Louis

The 49ers will face top seed Tulane in the quarterfinals

MILWAUKEE, WI - In a tightly contested battle, eighth-seeded Charlotte (10-10) advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 4-1 victory over ninth-seeded Saint Louis (7-12). Charlotte's Jonathan Clark claimed the win with a three set victory over Thomas Kwong at the no. 3 spot 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. The two matches at the no. 1 and no. 2 spots were late in the third set when the match was clinched.

The 49ers opened up a 3-1 lead after taking straight-set matches at the nos. 5 and 6 spots. Charlotte's David Bolin picked up a win at no. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-4 over Sanjeev Paramanthan. Earlier, Charlotte's Jonathan Vencatachellum claimed a win at the no. 6 spot, beating Taylor Curran, 6-1, 6-4. Saint Louis had briefly tied the match at one when Tom DeLarzak won at the no. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-1 over Charlotte's Christofer Boman.

Charlotte's Arturo Aguirre and Marlo Santoso did not finish their respective singles matches at number one and two.

Charlotte took a 1-0 lead after a battle for the doubles point. After splitting at the no. 2 and no. 3 spots, no. 1 doubles was hotly contested. The two teams went to a tie break and Charlotte picked up a key double fault to go up 4-2 in the tie break before eventually winning it 7-4.

In number one doubles, Charlotte's Bolin and Santoso defeated Saint Louis' DeLarzac and Vodicka, 9-8. In number two doubles, Charlotte's Clark and Boman defeated Saint Louis' Jobe and Paramanathan, 9-7. In number three doubles, Saint Louis' Kwong and Michael Hoosien defeated Charlotte's Stuart Lynas and Vencatachellum, 8-3.

Charlotte advances to meet top seed Tulane at 1 pm on Thursday.
