Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers (14-7) behind five singles victories defeated Southern Conference foe The Citadel, 5-2, at the D.L. Phillips Tennis Complex. The 49ers victory was their 14th of the season which marked the fourth time in Coach Jim Boykin's 14 seasons at Charlotte that the 49ers have won at least 14 matches in a season.
The Citadel won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte's Ryan Johnson and Felix Bernhoerster lost to The Citadel's Daniel Dossetor and James Eason, who are ranked #52 in the nation, 8-1. At number two doubles, Charlotte's Roy Sichel and Darren Mansell won their fourth straight match with an 8-7 win over The Citadel's Alberto Diaz and Derek Jose. At number three doubles, Charlotte's Brad Clinard and Aljoscha Jelinek lost to The Citadel's Frederic Petrilli and Martin King, 8-6.
Charlotte won five of the six singles matches to claim the victory. At number one singles, Charlotte's Sichel, who is ranked #80 in the nation, defeated The Citadel's Dossetor, 6-4, 6-3. At number two singles, Charlotte's Mansell saw his eight match winning streak end with a 6-3, 7-5 loss to The Citadel's Eason. At number three singles, Charlotte's Johnson clinched the victory for the 49ers with his 7-6, 6-4 win over The Citadel's Diaz. At number four singles, Charlotte's Jelinek defeated The Citadel's King, 6-2, 6-0. At number five singles, Charlotte's Clinard defeated The Citadel's Jose, 6-4, 6-0. At number six singles, Charlotte's Ricky Cuellar defeated The Citadel's Petrilli, 6-1, 6-1.
