Men's Soccer Falls In Heartbreaker At Fordham In Double Overtime

The 49ers hosts Xavier and Dayton next weekend in their Atlantic 10 Conference home opening weekend

Oct. 9, 2005

Box Score

Bronx, NY - The Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team controlled the action but were unlucky as Fordham defeated the 49ers, 1-0, on a penalty kick goal in double overtime.

"I am disappointed in the result," Charlotte coach John Tart said. "We controlled the play and had many great scoring chances. However, you have to give Fordham's defense credit they stopped all of our scoring chances. Then, unfortunately we made a mistake on defense in the box in the second overtime which resulted in the Fordham game-winning penalty kick. I thought the game would at worst end in a tie. But we must regroup and get ready for Xavier and Dayton at home next weekend."

In the second overtime, Charlotte defender John Nabers and goalkeeper Josh Beachem and Fordham's Omer Rozen were all fighting for the ball in the box. Well somehow, Rozen comes out with the ball and Nabers was forced to foul him in the box to prevent the game-winning score. A penalty kick was called as the result of the 49ers foul in the box. Fordham's Kevin Meyer then put the penalty kick in the back of the net at the 104:11 mark of the match giving the Rams the victory.

Charlotte controlled the play as they enjoyed a 16-8 shot advantage but they were just not able to put the ball in the back of the net. Adam Ruud led the 49ers with four shots. While, Blake Smith and Floyd Franks added three shots to the 49ers attack. Michael Rose and Steven Traeger each chipped in with two shots.

The 49ers host Xavier, Friday, October 14 at 6:30 pm at Transamerica Field in their Atlantic 10 Conference home opener.
