ROCK HILL, SC - The Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team behind two second half goals defeated Winthrop, 3-1, for their second straight victory. With the win, Charlotte improved to 3-2-1 on the season.
"This was an all around good performance by our team tonight," Charlotte coach John Tart said. "I am very proud of our team's effort. Floyd Franks played really well tonight. He was the catalyst for our team's play. This win continues our positive momentum heading into a very important Conference USA match against Memphis at home this Saturday."
Franks gave Charlotte an early 1-0 lead when he blasted a free kick from 35-yards out into the right corner of the goal in the 24th minute.
Winthrop knotted the game at one when Dee Vydra scored off a Michael Chumah assist in the 33rd minute.
Charlotte regained the lead for good when Steven Traeger scored his first goal of the season when he blasted a shot just outside the 18-yard box into the right corner of the goal just four and half minutes into the second half.
Charlotte added an insurance goal when Adam Ruud scored his team-high fourth goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Ruud's penalty kick goal came about because Franks was taken down in the box by a Winthrop defender.
The 49ers return to Conference USA play when they host Memphis at Transamerica Field, Saturday, September 25 at 7 pm.
