Birmingham, Ala. - UAB held the Charlotte men's soccer team scoreless until the 81st minute of the game, handing the 49ers a 4-1 loss in the second game of the UAB/LaQuinta Classic at West Campus Field on Saturday.
The Conference USA rivals combined for 39 total fouls, four yellow cards and a red card in the match, which was originally scheduled to be played on Friday night. The game was pushed to Saturday as a result of Hurricane Ivan.
The Blazers opened the scoring less than five and a half minutes into the game when Maurice Hughes found the back of the net. The teams continued to battle until forward Jerson Monteiro gave UAB a two-goal margin with his third score of the season with 9:53 remaining in the opening stanza.
UAB would stretch the lead to 4-0 before Charlotte's Pete Palomino scored his first goal of the season at the 81:06 mark in the second half. The 49ers (1-2-1 overall) finished with 19 shots, including nine on goal, while the Blazers shot 20 times and put seven on net.
UAB scored twice in each half to improve to 2-3 on the season. It was their first victory since they opened the 2004 campaign with a win over Gonzaga on Sept. 4.
Charlotte will face Birmingham-Southern, 4-1 winners over Western Kentucky earlier in the day, in Sunday's first game. Kick off is at 1:00 pm Eastern.
