Box Score

Charlotte, NC - Senior Evan Harding scored his second goal of the season as the 49ers men's soccer team tied the College of Charleston, 1-1, at Transamerica Field. With the tie, the 49ers go to 1-0-1 on the season.

"Tonight was a very hard fought match between two good teams," Charlotte coach John Tart said. "I am proud of the way our team played tonight. We played particularly the second half and overtime periods with the mentality of trying to win the game.. You have to give Charleston credit they withstood a great deal of pressure from our team late in regulation and in the overtimes."

The 49ers scored the game's first goal when Blake Smith took a corner kick in the 29th minute. Smith's corner kick found Harding near the far post. Harding's first touch went off a Charleston defender. Then, he corralled the ball again and sent a low shot into the lower left corner of the goal past the diving outstretched hand of Charleston goalkeeper Corbin Waller giving the 49ers a 1-0 first half lead.

Charleston tied the score when Wes Knight scored off a Zach Bennett pass in the 36th minute.

The 49ers finished the game with a 16-12 shot advantage. They had several great scoring chances particularly in the second half. Michael Rose had one of his game-high six shots bounce off the post during the second half. Pete Palomino finished the game with three shots. While, Blake Smith added two shots to the 49ers attack.

The 49ers take part in the Davidson Adidas Classic next weekend, September 1-3. The 49ers battle Loyola-Chicago in their first game of the Classic, Friday, September 1 at 5 pm.
