Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's golf team is ranked 23rd in the country in the latest GolfWorld/NGCA Coaches' Poll and 25th in the country in GolfWeek's latest release. In addition, Golfstat lists the 49ers 28th in the country.
Charlotte won two of five events in the fall campaign and placed 11th in the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club to open the spring campaign. Their next event will be the General Hackler Invitational at Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mar. 11-12.
Charlotte moved up as high as 17th in the national rankings during last season's run through the NCAA East Regionals and into the NCAA Championship Tournament. During the 2005-06 season, the 49ers won four tournaments, placed fifth in the NCAA East Regionals and finished 22nd in the country at the NCAA championships.
The defending Atlantic 10 Champions return their entire lineup, including A-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and 2006 team MVP Ray Sheedy and fellow all-Atlantic 10 choices Matt Mincer, Andrew DiBitetto, Jonas Enander Hedin and Trevor Murphy. A-10 Coach of the Year Jamie Green has led the 49ers to eight tournament titles in three years as head coach and seen his team break single-season (287.9 team stroke average), tournament (-35, 829 at BYU Cougar Classic) and 18-hole (-13, 275 at BYU Cougar Classic) records during his short tenure.
