HAlton Arena - Charlotte 49ers head men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz has announced the bulk of the team's 2007-08 non-conference schedule which includes eight home games, with two vs. ACC foes, a total of four games against ACC teams and a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. The schedule also has a strong Carolina flavor, with possibly seven games against teams from North or South Carolina. Seven of 11 scheduled games are against RPI Top 75 teams. Seven opponents also advanced to post-season in 2007, including NCAA participants Davidson, Maryland, Southern Illinois and Georgia Tech.
"This is the best non-conference schedule we have played in my time at Charlotte," said 10th-year head coach Bobby Lutz. "It is a very attractive and challenging schedule that should appeal to our fans and prepare our team for A-10 play. While the four ACC teams will obviously attract the most attention, the depth of the schedule is shown by home games against Southern Illinois, Davidson and Appalachian State, who all played in the post-season. Road games at Hofstra and the Virgin Isles tournament make this a gauntlet that our staff and team is ready to run."
The 49ers have eight non-conference home games, including matchups with ACC foes Wake Forest and Maryland, as well, NCAA participants Southern Illinois and Davidson, who are both in ESPN.com's Andy Katz's preseason Top 25. Regional matchups with Appalachian State, High Point and Gardner-Webb add a Carolina flair while Fairleigh Dickinson rounds out the home slate. Charlotte will play on the road at Hofstra and Clemson and participate in the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The 49ers will face Wake Forest (Nov. 29) and Maryland (Jan. 5) at Bobcats Arena, home of the 2008 NCAA East Regional. The rest of the 49ers' home schedule will be played at Halton Arena.
