49ers' Thomas, Jonsson Named C-USA Scholar-Athletes of Year

Charlotte had the top student-athletes in men's basketball and men's tennis this past year.

June 7, 2002

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers seniors Jobey Thomas (Charlotte, N.C.) and Ola Jonsson (Viken, Sweden) were named Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports by Conference USA.

Thomas, an academic all-America who was a first-team all-Conference USA basketball star, is the first 49er to win the men's basketball award. He retired as Charlotte's and Conference USA's all-time leading three-point shooter. Thomas graduated with a GPA of over 3.5 as a Communications major.

Jonsson, a four-time all-Conference USA selection, won the men's tennis award for the second straight year. Jonsson became the 49ers first men's tennis player to be named first team all-Conference USA, last year. He was a second-team performer this year. With a 3.97 GPA as a Business major, Jonsson is an academic all-America nominee. Already named academic all-region, the academic all-America team will be announced shortly.

Thomas and Jonsson join golfer Neal Kauffman (1999-00), runners Terence Fagan (1998-99), Stephanie Burklow (1997-98) and Andy Tucker (1996-97) as 49ers who have been named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Conference USA.
