The Game: Senior Curtis Withers, who leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in rebounding and double-doubles and ranks sixth in scoring, scored 23 points and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds vs. Dayton, Saturday. The 20-20 performance, the first in the 10-year history of Halton Arena, helped Withers earn A-10 Player of the Week honors while Charlotte (13-8; 6-3 A-10) maintained its hold on second-place in the A-10 standings. Wednesday, the 49ers host Temple (12-8; 5-4 A-10) at 7:30 p.m. (WFNZ Radio: Matt Swierad; Lane Odom). Temple owns an RPI of 43 and the Owls have won six of their last eight, including a non-conference win over then-Top 25 Maryland. The Owls also own wins over Alabama and South Carolina. The 49ers Homecoming Win over Dayton was the 49ers' 99th in the 10-year history of Halton Arena. Charlotte will go for #100 vs. Temple.
Withers' Heights: All-America candidate Curtis Withers is averaging a double-double of 16.0 points and 11.2 rebounds. He leads the A-10 with 12 double-doubles and has recorded a double-double in six of the last eight games. His 11.2 rebounds rank 4th in the NCAA and are nearly +2.0 more than UMass' Rashaun Freeman (9.3), who is second in the A-10. Withers rebounding average improves to 12.3 in A-10 play and he has six double-doubles in nine A-10 games. In his career, Withers ranks 3rd all-time in double-doubles with 40 and fourth all-time in rebounds with 915. In the win over Dayton, he passed Demon Brown to move into 10th-place all-time in scoring with 1571 points. He is one of only four 49ers that have combined 1500 career points with 900 career rebounds.
20/20: With his monstrous 23-point; 21-rebound perfomance vs. Dayton, Curtis Withers posted the first 20-20 game in the 10-year history of Halton Arena and the 49ers first 20-20 game since Cedric Maxwell had two during the 1976-77 season. Withers also grabbed the most rebounds by a 49er in 16 years (Cedric Ball, 22 rebs. vs. South Florida, Jan. 4, 1990). His 21 boards are the most in the A-10, this year, and tie for the 4th-most in A-10 history. During the game, Withers pulled his 900th career rebound (915) and moved into the 49ers all-time Top 10 in scoring (10th: 1571).
Double Trouble: National Player of the Year candidate Curtis Withers notched his league-leading 12th double-double of the year with 23 pts; 21 rebounds vs. Dayton. It was his sixth double-double in nine A-10 games and marked the fifth time this year that he has pulled 15 or more rebounds. His 40 career double-doubles rank 3rd all-time for the 49ers behind all-time greats Jarvis Lang (53) and Cedric Maxwell (41). He ranks as the 49ers 4th all-time best rebounder (915) and recently became just the 4th 49er to combine over 1500 career points with over 750 career rebounds. He averages a double-double of 16.0 points and 11.2 rebounds and ranks 4th in the NCAA in rebounding average.
WITHERS IN SELECT COMPANY: Senior Curtis Withers is one of only four 49ers all-time to combine over 1500 career points (1571) with over 750 career rebounds (915). He joins all-time greats DeMarco Johnson (C-USA, 1998), Jarvis Lang (Metro, 1995) and Cedric Maxwell (Sun Belt, 1977), who were each named Conference Player of the Year as seniors.
Alexander's Been Great: Over the last four games, junior De'Angelo Alexander has averaged 23.0 points (.483 3FG%) with three games of 20 or more points, including a career-high 34 at St. Bonaventure. He has four 20-point efforts in A-10 play and leads the Niners with eight games of 20 or more points this season. He has scored in double figures in 16 of the last 17 games.
REBOUNDING: Charlotte leads the A-10 with 39.5 rebounds per game and a +6.1 rebounding margin. It has outrebounded its opponent 14 times (nine of those by double-figures.) Charlotte is 12-3 when it ties or wins the battle of the boards; 1-5 when it gets outrebounded. Curtis Withers leads the league and ranks 4th in the NCAA with 11.2 boards per game, nearly +2.0 more than #2 Rashaun Freeman of UMass (9.3/gm). The last 49er to average double-digits in rebounds: Jarvis Lang, 10.1, 1993-94.
