ST. LOUIS - Marque Perry had 17 points and four assists in his regular-season home finale as Saint Louis beat Charlotte 50-39 for its sixth straight victory Wednesday night.
The Billikens (14-12, 8-7 Conference USA) held Charlotte to 28 percent shooting and a season low for points. The 49ers scored only 13 points in the first half, also a season worst.
No player reached double figures until Perry hit from the key with 10 minutes to go, and the only other one to make it was teammate Izik Ohanon with 10. Perry got a standing ovation when he was pulled with 15 seconds left.
Saint Louis held Demon Brown, the nation's leading 3-point shooter, to nine points on 3-for-15 shooting. Brown has struggled the last two games, going a combined 4-for-24, yet he still climbed to a tie for seventh on the NCAA single-season 3-point list with 132.
Brown, who is averaging 17.6 points and 4.9 3-pointers per game, got constant attention from Saint Louis guard Josh Fisher and got few open looks. Charlotte, also making a late-season drive for respectability, lost for only the second time in seven games.
Charlotte (13-14, 8-7) made a late run of sorts, closing the gap to 36-32 on a free throw by Curtis Withers with 4:33 to go. Saint Louis answered with a dunk by Kenny Brown and a 3-pointer by Ohanon for a nine-point lead with 3:09 left, and Perry helped close it out by going 5-for-6 from the line in the final two minutes.
Charlotte beat Saint Louis at home 62-55 Jan. 29, getting 24 points from Brown. But the 49ers are winless in seven games at the Savvis Center.
Saint Louis led 23-13 at the half despite 29.6 percent shooting, including
3-for-10 by Perry. The Billikens compensated with airtight defense, forcing 13
turnovers and holding Charlotte to 27.8 percent shooting and a season-low for
points in a half.
