Mike Ambrose Named Atlantic 10 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Charlotte Baseball's standout shortstop beats out nine other candidates for top academic award

June 29, 2006

Philadelphia - Xavier tennis player Kristen Clary and Mike Ambrose of the Charlotte baseball team have been named the Atlantic 10 female and male Scholar-Athletes of the Year in voting conducted among the Conference's directors of athletics.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is the conference's top academic honor, covering all of the A-10's sports teams.

Ambrose (St. Thomas, Ontario) ended his collegiate career by being named to the Atlantic 10's All-Conference First Team as a shortstop. In 55 games he batted .366 with two home runs and 51 RBI. The only two-time A-10 Player of the Week in 2006 placed among the top 12 in 12 different hitting categories this season, including batting average (fourth), hits (83, second), RBI (fifth), and triples (six, tied for second).

Off the field, the Atlantic 10's Baseball Student-Athlete of the Year posted a 3.92 grade point average as a psychology major. He earned ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-American honors in 2006, becoming the first Charlotte baseball player ever to be named to the national first team. He closed his career by posting a 4.00 grade point average over his last two semesters to earn a spot on Charlotte's Chancellor's List.

Additional male nominees included Mike Bernardo (Rhode Island, track & field), Brian Carroll (George Washington, golf), Eric Contreras (Dayton, cross country), Christopher Johansen (Saint Louis, swimming), Jon Korhonen (Massachusetts, cross country, track), Chris Lahoud (Richmond, soccer), Ryan Moseley (La Salle, soccer/track & field), Noah Salsi (Duquesne, soccer), and Brian Thornton (Xavier, basketball).

Other Atlantic 10 female Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees included Saona Chapman (Richmond, basketball), Cassie Ficken (Charlotte (cross country/track), Melanie Kasparek (Rhode Island, soccer), Lauren Krieger (St. Bonaventure, softball), Tyler McIlwraith (Saint Louis, basketball), Maggie Moss (George Washington, swimming), Rachel Papin (La Salle, cross country/track), Katie Parry (Saint Joseph's, rowing), Kelly Pohlman (Dayton, track & field), Lauren Proctor (Massachusetts, softball), Ashley Shepps (Temple, field hockey), Diana Wuebker (Duquesne, volleyball), and Maureen Zivic (Fordham, track & field).

Clary follows in the footsteps of her sister Lauren, who won the A-10 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year last season. Kristen earned the award after being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team for the second year in a row. The three-time A-10 Academic All-Conference pick was a member of the Dean's List all eight semesters and earned the school's community service award for her outstanding record of volunteerism during four years at Xavier.
