Philadelphia - Charlotte 49ers senior Cassie Ficken (Conifer, Colo.) has been chosen as the cross country programs' first ever Atlantic 10 Conference Performer of the Week. The announcement was made by the A-10 office on Monday afternoon.
Joining Ficken with A-10 honors were local products Aja Jackson (Charlotte, N.C./E.E. Waddell HS) and Adu Dentamo (Charlotte, N.C./Vance HS). Jackson earned women's co-Rookie of the Week honors, while Dentamo was the A-10's men's Rookie of the Week.
The three cross country stars join 49ers women's soccer player Lindsey Beam as the first four student-athletes to earn Atlantic 10 weekly honors.
Additionally, both Charlotte's men's and women's teams were chosen first in the weekly polls produced by the Atlantic 10 coaches. The Niners women's team maintained its top ranking earned a week ago, while the Charlotte men edged up one spot to move ahead of La Salle in this week's rankings.
Ficken was honored by the Atlantic 10 after capturing the individual title at the 2005 Clemson Invitational on Saturday. She covered the 5K course in a time of 17:36, which is the fastest 5K time in the Atlantic 10 so far this year. Ficken beat out a field of 117 other runners to take the title. Charlotte finished behind only nationally-ranked No. 22 Georgia in the race.
Freshman Aja Jackson was chosen as the A-10 co-Rookie of the Week for her performance at the Clemson Invitational, where she finished eighth overall and was the seventh-fastest collegiate competitor. Jackson, running in her first collegiate 5K race, clocked a time of 18:29 to help lead the Charlotte women to a second-place finish in the team competition.
Ficken and Jackson teamed up to take the title at the Charlotte Relay last weekend.
On the men's side, freshman Adu Dentamo was the A-10 Rookie of the Week for his performance at Clemson. He covered the 8K layout in a time of 25:35, finishing third on the 49ers team and in ninth place overall in the 84-man field. The Charlotte men's team also finished second just behind Clemson, and the 49ers edged out Georgia (NCAA Championship team competitors last year).
