49ers Tame Cougars, 3-1, In C-USA Volleyball Action

Charlotte earned their 16th win of the season, the most for the program since 1994.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team earned their 16th win of the season, the most for the program since 1994, defeating Houston, 3-1, Friday night at Halton Arena. It is the 49ers' first win ever over the Cougars.

Courtney Burg and Abbey Szlanfucht both hung 20 kills on the board for Charlotte (16-14, 6-6 C-USA). Burg also had 18 digs to earn her 18th double-double of the season. She now has 973 career kills with at least two matches left to reach 1,000. Laura Darnell logged 24 digs to raise her season total to 439, good for fourth on the school's single-season list.

Three players reached double figures in kills for Houston (16-11, 6-6 C-USA). Jenny Tanneberger led the way with 20, followed by Laura Koster's 16. Jane Anne Karasek came off the bench to post 12 kills.

The 49ers took a 1-0 lead in the match after picking up a 30-22 win in game one. They were in a position to make it a sweep with a 30-26 win in game two, but the Cougars answered with a 30-21 in the third game. In game four, Charlotte took the lead early, then held off a late Houston rally to win 30-25 and clinch the match.

The Niners return to action tomorrow, when they host TCU at 7:00. It will be Charlotte's final home match of the season and mark the final appearance in Halton Arena for seniors Burg, Darnell and Megan Mosness.
