Volleyball Sweeps Furman, 3-0

Charlotte closes the regular-season this weekend with home matches against Houston and TCU.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team returned to the win column in the their final non-conference match of the season, sweeping visiting Furman, 3-0, Tuesday night at Halton Arena. With the win, the Niners are set to close out the regular-season this weekend against Houston and TCU.

Courtney Burg was the big hitter for Charlotte (15-14) with a match-high 18 kills. Her string of five straight double-doubles was snapped as she came up with eight digs. She hit .273 for the match as she logged only six errors and posted three service aces. Lisa Newell was also in double figures for the 49ers, knocking down 13 kills. It is the 13th time the freshman has had 10 or more kills this season.

Furman (19-13) was led by Abby Simon, who finished the evening with 17 kills and 14 digs. She also led the Paladins with a pair of service aces. Caitlin White contributed 11 kills and Carrie Rowley added 11 digs.

Despite the sweep, the match was pretty close. Games one and three were decided by a pair of points, 34-32 and 33-31, respectively. The second game belonged to the 49ers, 30-23, although the Paladins pulled to within seven late. In game three, both teams took turns in front and both took several cracks at game point. Charlotte clinched the match on a block from Katie Hall and Abbey Szlanfucht.

The Niners return to action Friday versus Houston at 7:00. Saturday's match against TCU will be the team's final home match of the season and marks the final home appearance for seniors Burg, Laura Darnell and Megan Mosness.
