CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Five, count them, five players reached double figures in kills to lead the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Saint Louis Friday night at Halton Arena. The win bumps the 49ers' record back to .500 and improves their position for qualifying for next week's Conference USA Tournament.
Three of the five players with double-figure kill totals also posted double-doubles for Charlotte (14-14, 4-11 C-USA). Kathleen Ramos paced the Niners with a team-best 17 kills and 18 digs. Courtney Burg added 16 kills and 17 digs, while Esra Akgun chipped in 16 kills and 13 digs. Katie Hall and Jessica Kelly both knocked down 11 kills. Abra Geissler came up with 10 digs. Saint Louis (11-13, 7-8 C-USA) was led by Colleen Hunter with 21 kills and 22 digs.
The 49ers came up determined to pick up the 'W', rolling to a 30-19 win with a .444 hitting percentage. The went up 2-0 after the second game, earning a 30-28 victory. The Billikens used the long break between games to regroup and prevented the sweep with a 30-26 win in game three. Charlotte clinched the win in the fourth game, though, with a 30-21 win.
The Niners close the regular-season tomorrow when they host Memphis at 7:00 in Halton Arena. It will be the final match at home for seniors Akgun, Ramos and Ashley Ferris. Admission is $3 for adults. Youth 17-and-under and Charlotte students will be admitted free.
