CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Marquette used a 15-12 win in game five to pull out a 3-2 victory over the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team Friday night at Halton Arena. The loss snaps the 49ers' three-match win streak.
Marquette (16-9, 8-5 C-USA) was led by Mehgan Devine with 20 kills. Vesna Grbavac tallied 14 kills, while Jennifer Amobi had 12 kills for the Golden Eagles. Charlotte's (12-13, 3-10 C-USA) top hitter was freshman Katie Hall, who put up 20 kills of her own. Hall hit .471 for the night and teamed up to register five blocks. The Niners also got big nights from Courtney Burg, Esra Akgun and Kathleen Ramos with all three posting double-doubles. Burg finished the night with 19 kills and 16 digs. Akgun had 12 kills and 17 digs, while Ramos had 17 kills and 12 digs.
The 49ers picked up a 30-21 win in the firsg game to take the lead early in the match. The Golden Eagles countered in the second game though, with a 30-18 win. They went on to earn a 30-27 win in game three, holding off a big Niners rally. Trailing 10-1, Charlotte battled back to take finally take a 24-23 lead on a Ramos kill. The 49ers used the comeback to put together a 30-24 win in the fourth game, but fell to Marquette, 15-12, in game five.
The 49ers travel to Louisville tomorrow for a match with the Cardinals Sunday at 2:00. Charlotte will play at Winthrop next Wednesday, Nov. 7 before returning home to close the regular season with Saint Louis and Memphis next weekend.
