Charlotte, NC - Junior Lisa Newell and sophomore Jessica Oldenburg contributed 16 kills apiece to lead the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-28, 30-27, 30-25) win over Southern Miss in Conference USA play on Friday night at Halton Arena.
Oldenburg hit .483 in the match, committing just two errors and totaling 20.5 points, to help Charlotte improve to 17-8 overall and 3-4 in C-USA play. It was the fifth time in seven conference matches that Oldenburg has reached double figures in kills. She served up three aces, including two in a five-point spurt that got the Niners back into game three after falling behind early.
Southern Miss (5-14, C-USA 0-6) came out of the extended break with a surprising 11-4 start to game three. Charlotte then reeled off five unanswered points, including two aces from Oldenburg, to force a Golden Eagles time out at 11-9. The Niners took their first lead since 1-0 when Abbey Szlanfucht laid down an ace to make the score 19-18, and the team didn't let up in outscoring Southern Miss 11-7 the rest of the way to close out the match.
In game two, the score was tight (17-16) before Charlotte went on a 5-2 run to take a four point lead and force a Golden Eagle time out. The Niners would never lead by less than two, closing out the game on a kill by Newell.
Charlotte trailed for most of game one and were down by as much as five points, before taking their first lead at 22-21. They led until Southern Miss tied the score and then took a one-point advantage at 27-26, leading to a Niner time out. Coming out of the huddle, Charlotte began setting Newell, who had three of the team's final four kills to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead in the match.
Newell, who led all players with 21 points, hit .379 with five blocks (three solo). Charlotte's top attacker, Szlanfucht, was held to just five kills on - 0.65 hitting but led all players with 22 digs.

The team will look to continue the trend on Saturday night at 7:00, when they play Tulane in a special "Dig for the Cure" match. Fans can pledge money per dig, or make a flat donation, with all proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Niner head coach Lisa Marston started the program, which now includes all 14 C-USA schools and has a goal of raising $42,000 for the local Komen affiliates in each school's community.
