Charlotte, N.C. - Upperclassmen took the spotlight on Friday night as the Charlotte 49ers won at home 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 30-22) in Atlantic 10 action over Rhode Island at Halton Arena. The game was the 4th Annual Dig for Cure Night, benefiting the Breast Cancer research. Charlotte improves to 16-9 overall and evens its conference record to 4-4. The Rams drop to 6-18, with a 2-5 A-10 record. Seniors Lynae Mulder and Jessica Oldenburg and juniors Alma Arroyo and Eden Ramos all had steady nights in the win. Mulder, Oldenburg and Arroyo had 14 kills each, while Ramos distributed 49 assists in the three-game victory.
After a 3-3 open in game one, Charlotte ripped off a 15-4 run to power to an 18-9 lead and never looked back, taking the 30-20 game-one victory. The Niners hit for an astounding .447 attack percentage in the opening frame. Seniors Jessica Oldenburg and Lynae Mulder had six kills each in the first game.
Game two saw the visiting Rams jump out to a quick 3-1 lead, but the steady Niners tied the game at six and surged to a 22-13 lead. Mulder paced Charlotte with eight more kills in that second period.
Following the intermission, Charlotte opened game three to a 3-0 margin and never gave up the lead en route to the sweep of the Rams.
Junior Cori Dayton finished with her 16th double-double of the season, as she posted 10 kills and 11 digs. Arroyo also logged a double-double with 16 digs to go along with her 14 kills. Sophomore libero Carly Romberg was a machine, digging 19 balls for the Niners.

The 49ers raised more than $4,400 on the night, which goes to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. Nearly 30 schools are hosting similar nights to raise funds for the cause this season.
