CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team threw everything it had at Cincinnati, including the kitchen sink, but came up short against the 25th-ranked team in the country, 3-1, Friday night at Halton Arena. A warm-up to Midight Madness, a crowd of 536 was on hand, the team's largest of the season.
"We put forth a much better effort tonight," head coach Lisa Marston said. "I thought we executed the game plan well. There were only two things that we didn't adjust to. And if there's only two things to change against the 25th-ranked team in the country, then we are going in the right direction. Lisa Newell and Jessica Kelly were exceptional for us. We're looking forward to playing Louisville tomorrow night."
Newell and Kelly both topped 20 points for Charlotte (6-17, 0-5 C-USA). Newell accounted for a match-high 21 points, knocking down 16 kills to go along with a service ace, a solo block and six block assists. Kelly logged 18 kills with a solo block and two block assists for 20 points. Chanda Waller and Millicent Martin also scored in double figures for the Niners with 14 and 12, respectively.
Julie Dupont led Cincinnati (18-2, 4-0 C-USA) with 19 points. She finished the evening with 16 kills, two aces and two block assists. Rachel Torblaa also had 16 kills to go along with a service ace, a block assist and a solo block. She ended the night with 18.5 points.
Despite suffering the loss, the 49ers played the Bearcats even for the better part of all four games. After Cincinnati took game one, 30-23, Charlotte came back to even the match with a 31-29 win in game two. The Cats held off the Niners in the third and fourth games as well, 30-22 and 30-25.
