TAMPA, Fla. - South Florida used a fourth-game nine-point run to down the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team, 3-1, Saturday night in Tampa. The 49ers won game three to hold off elimination, but were unable to hold off the Bulls and suffered their first conference loss of the season.
"We played hard, but not as smart as we should have," head coach Lisa Marston said. "South Florida is a phenomonal team, and our girls never backed down. Michelle Collier is always tough, but once you contain her, they have another weapon step up. All in all, we played hard and right with them. We made some young mistakes, but I'm pleased with our effort."
Collier led South Florida (14-4, 2-0 C-USA) with 16 kills. Jolene Patton and Corinne Walsh were right on her heels with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Courtney Burg set the tone for Charlotte (10-8, 1-1 C-USA) with 14 kills. Lisa Newell also finished in double figures with 10. She finished the night with a .368 hitting percentage. Megan Mosness had her second-straight strong outing, tallying 41 assists. She replaced Molly McDonald, the Niners' regular setter, when she went out with an ankle injury at UAB Friday night.
The Bulls took a 2-0 lead in the match with 30-23 and 30-16 wins in the first two games. The 49ers answered in game three, however, with a 30-24 win and forced game four. South Florida regrouped after the loss to clinch the match with a 30-14 victory.
Charlotte returns home on Sunday and will play at cross-county rival Davidson Tuesday night. The 49ers return to Halton Arena next weekend, when they host Marquette and DePaul.
