CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UAB improved to 2-0 in Conference USA volleyball action, defeating Charlotte, 3-1, Saturday night at Halton Arena. Unfortunately for the 49ers, they fell to 0-2 in C-USA with the loss after being edged by USF on Friday.

UAB (9-9, 2-0 C-USA) had a pair of players with double-doubles. Martina Shields led the way, scoring 18.5 points on 17 kills, one service ace and one block assist. She also had 18 digs. Breanne Swenson was the other player to top double figures in kills and digs. She posted 14 kills and 14 digs. Swenson also finished with an ace and a block assist to score 15.5 points.

Jessica Kelly led Charlotte (6-13, 0-2 C-USA) with 13.5 points on seven kills, two service aces, three solo blocks and three block assists. Lynae Mulder knocked down a team-best 10 kills to go along with an ace and a block assist for 11.5 points. Lisa Newell and Jessica Oldenburg also scored in double figures for the Niners with 11 and 10.5 points, respectively.

Just like the previous match against USF, the 49ers found themselves behind after the first game. The Blazers came out to take game one, 30-22. But also like the USF match, Charlotte answered with a win in the second game, 30-23. UAB regrouped, however, and took the third and fourth games, 30-23 and 30-21, to clinch the match.

The Niners will close out their homestand on Sunday, when they host non-conference opponent Jacksonville at 4:00.
