Pittsburgh, Pa. - Led by junior Cori Dayton's 17 kills, the Charlotte 49er's volleyball squad turned out a three-game sweep (30-26, 30-25, 30-17) of the Duquesne Dukes on the road in Pittsburgh's A.J. Palumbo Center on Sunday afternoon. The win was the first for the Niners in Atlantic 10 play this season. Charlotte improves to 12-8 on the season and a 1-3 A-10 record, while Duquesne slips to 7-14 and 1-3 on A-10 play.
The Niners started out of the gates hot, building a nine-point lead in game one to cruise to the win. Dayton put down nine kills in game one, while senior Lynae Mulder added five kills in the first game. Mulder finished with 15 points and five blocks in the match.
In game two, the Niners launched out to a 6-2 lead and the lead stayed around five to the five-point victory. Charlotte senior outside hitter Jessica Oldenburg led the charge with five kills in the second frame. Oldenburg was the third Niner with double-digit kills, netting 10 on the afternoon.
Game three was all Niners with early runs of four and five points in a row, plus an 8-0 run late to demoralize the Dukes en route the match victory.
Charlotte held a 61-35 kills advantage in the match in which Duquesne never led.
"Lynae, Claire (Crumpton) and Jessica had great offensive nights for us," said Charlotte head coach Lisa Marston.
"Carly Romberg was amazing with her digs. Our blocking continues to improve and I'm excited for the great road win."
Romberg, the sophomore libero, had a match-high 23 digs, while four other 49ers logged double-digit digs, including Dayton's double-double as she added 15 digs to her 17 kills for the feat. Junior setter Eden Ramos was again solid, with 45 assists.
