CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers will welcome 12 other schools to the university area this week for the 2003 Conference USA Track and Field Championship. The three-day event, which will be held at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center, begins Thursday, May 15, and runs through Saturday, May 17.
Daily admission is $5 for adults and $2 for youth 17-and-under. All Conference USA students will be admitted free with their university's ID. There are no packages for the weekend.
In addition to Charlotte, some of the top track and field programs in the country will compete. TCU's men are the defending league champions and have finished among the top five at the NCAA Championships three times. On the women's side, Houston, who is coached by two-time Olympian and former world record holder in the 100 meters Leroy Burrell, is the defending team champ. The Cougars are looking to become the first women's team to win three conference titles in a four-year span after earning trophies in 2000 and 2002.
The 49ers are also expected to be well represented. Abe Morlu, who competed for Liberia at the 2000 Olympics, leads the men into the weekend. He owns the third-best mark in C-USA in the triple jump this season. Teammates Adam Evans, Twann Atkins and Russell Slade are reponsible for the league's fourth-ranked marks in the 400, 110 hurdles and 1,500, respectively. Danielle Taylor and Sharonda Johnson have the highest ranks for the women's team. Both are second with Taylor in the pole vault and Johnson in the triple jump. Aisha Thomas posted the third-best mark in the 400 meters earlier this season.
The meet kicks off on Thursday with the majority of the day dedicated to the decathlon and heptathlon. The men's and women's hammer and men's and women's 10,000-meter run will also be held. The hammer begins at 3:00, while the 10,000 is slated to begin at 7:45.
Field events will continue throughout the day on Friday as well as the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon. Preliminary rounds for running events will also be held. The women's 1,500 starts events on the track at 4:30. Teams will end the day at 8:25 with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The meet wraps up on Saturday. Field events begin with the men's high jump at 10:00. Running events start at 1:00 with the women's 4x100 relay. Finals will be held for the rest of the afternoon, concluding with the men's 4x400 at 3:55. Presentations of the team championship trophies and individual awards will begin at 4:15.
