Track & Field News Magazine Recognizes 49ers with International and National Rankings

Dagnachew, Johnson, Springs, Woods and Men's 800m Relay Team Ranked

Jan. 21, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49er track and field competitors posted one world-ranked performance and five nationally-ranked performances during the 2007 calendar year, according to the Track and Field News Magazine's Annual Year-in-Review January issue.

"It's great to get feedback of this nature on the success of your program," head coach Bob Olesen said. "We see all kind of rankings throughout the year with conference, region and NCAA national, so it's nice to see an overall list of where your top people rank in the United States. Having representation on elite lists such as these, combined with the largest team rosters we've had, shows that the vision for the program is healthy, providing opportunity for a large number of participants while having success at the conference and post-season levels."

Shareese Woods, a four-time All American, closed out her career at Charlotte with a world ranking in the 200m dash, coming in 29th overall after clocking 22.74 for the event, a performance which also ranked her 13th in the United States. Woods, who is now pursuing a professional running career, also earned a ranking of 39th in the nation for the 400m with a time of 52.80.

Sharonda Johnson similarly finished her career at Charlotte in style, finding herself ranked 22nd in the United States after jumping 43'3" in the triple jump. She is now in graduate school at UNC Charlotte.

Senior Tsehaye Dagnachew, redshirted in 2007, put together a productive season competing at the U.S. National Championship in the 3,000m steeplechase, earning a national ranking of 29th on the year after racing to a time of 10:12.71. Dagnachew will complete her stint with the 49ers during the upcoming outdoor season.

Junior Pat Springs leaped onto the United States rankings at 37th in the long jump with a performance of 20'7.25."

The men's 4x800m relay squad, consisting of junior Chase Eckard, junior Adu Dentamo, sophomore Javan Lapp and sophomore Aaron Kauffman, placed an impressive 18th in the national rankings after winning the Atlantic 10 outdoor title in 2007 with a time of 7:28.97.

Dagnachew, Springs, and the 4x800m relay team will join the rest of the 49ers when they commence the 2008 outdoor season with the 49er Classic in March.
