Track & Field Opens Season At North Carolina Big 12

The 49ers had seven top-five finishes in their indoor season-opener.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers track and field teams began their indoor season Saturday, running at the North Carolina Big 12 at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse. The 49ers posted seven top-five finishes, including five from the women.

Charlotte's women had top five showings in a pair of field events. Rolanda Gabriel placed third in the triple jump, covering a distance of 39'1", while Adrienne Lunsford was fourth in the high jump. She cleared a height of 5'3.75". In the sprints, Bernadette Washington began her sophomore campaign with a time of 7.74 seconds in the 60-meter dash to place third. Cassie Ficken also finished third in Chapel Hill. She had a time of 10:34.58 in the 3,000-meter run. The women had the best finish in the distance medley relay, placing second with a 13:41.50 time.

Abe Morlu had the highest finish for the men's squad. He finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.17. Ed Schlichter was responsible for the other top-five, placing fourth in the 3,000 with a time of 8:40.17.

Next weekend, Charlotte travels to Boone, N.C., to run at the Fifth Appalachian Indoor.
