CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sharonda Johnson opened 2004 with a win for the Charlotte 49ers track and field program, placing first in the triple jump at North Carolina's Big 12 meet in Chapel Hill over the weekend. It was the second meet of the season for the 49ers' indoor teams.
Johnson won the triple jump with a distance of 40-4.25, her second-best mark of the season. Danielle Taylor also recorded a top five for the women at North Carolina. She finished fifth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 10-11.75. It equalled the team's season best, set in the season-opener at Clemson.
Derrick Johnson led the men's team with a pair of top fives. He was fourth in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 60-meter dash with times of 22.13 and 6.84 seconds, respectively. John Okonkwo placed fourth in the high jump. His mark of 6-6 was the team's best this season. The 49ers' relay team also placed fourth in the 4x400, posting a time of 3:21.65.
Charlotte will return to North Carolina this weekend for the Tar Heel Fast Times.
