Van Norman Guides Mids to 3-1 Win Over Colgate In Volleyball Action

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Led by senior setter Jessica Van Norman (Oakland, Calif.), the Navy volleyball team improved to 6-5 in the Patriot League with a 3-1 win (30-24, 30-24, 23-30, 30-18) over Colgate at Macdonough Hall Saturday night.

“I thought we responded well after dropping our match to Bucknell last night,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. “Every match counts as we get closer to the Patriot League Tournament.”

Van Norman produced a team-best hitting percentage, knocking down 10 of her 19 attacks for kills for a 52.6 hitting efficiency. Meanwhile, she served as the Mids’ setter, recording 42 assists, while adding nine digs.

Navy jumped out to an early two-games-to-zero lead behind a strong hitting attack by Van Norman and outside hitters Ashley Van Hartesvelt (Breckenridge, Colo.) and Jamie Leverentz (Los Alamitos, Calif.). Van Norman recorded seven kills in the first-two games, while Van Hartesvelt and Leverentz each tallied five. Leverentz also recorded all of her game-high five service aces in the second game.

In the third game, Navy looked out of focus, while Colgate jumped on an early lead and was able to close out the third game with a win. A solid serving effort by Becca Sadowsky led the Raiders’ charge, while she was also strong in attacking mode with a trio of kills.

The Mids got off to a terrific start in the fourth game, leading the deciding contest, 10-2. Navy hit well, while keeping Colgate in the red with a -7.1 percent hitting mark. Van Hartesvelt had a particularly strong fourth game, posting four kills, two digs, two solo blocks and a pair of block assists.

Van Hartesvelt led the Mids with 14 kills and six blocks, while Leverentz paced Navy with five service aces and 20 digs.

For the Raiders, rookie middle hitter Caity Whiteaker recorded a team-high 10 kills, while senior outside hitter Melissa Rawson added eight kills and a team-high 17 digs and three block assists.

The Midshipmen return to action Wednesday when they play host to Drexel at 7 p.m.
